Apple always take ages to update man pages. I was told in another forum that diskutil had been updated in 10.4.3 to support the 'GPTFormat' flag, but that change does not appear in any of the man pages I have looked at on 10.4.3 or 10.4.4 machines. Still, makes the service technicians job a little more difficult. I think you have it correct radiosaw and Chuckstar, too much QA work on too many machines' firmware for what they may consider a corner case. I suspect that it is not in Apple's roadmap to make it so Open Firmware Macs can boot GPT formatted disks. They just cannot boot from them even though I have a valid PPC 10.4.4 system on them. All of them are running Tiger and all of them can can mount and access the HFS+ volumes normally. I have verified that myself by creating a GPT formatted drive on my PPC based machines.

This hasn't been explicitly documented by Apple anywhere I can find, but it looks like it won't be possible to create a disk that is bootable on an Intel Mac and a PowerPC Mac, even if that disk has an Intel installation of Mac OS X on one partition and a PPC Mac OS X on another partition.
